Renault / Nissan 1.2 Timing Chain Replacement

A different fault mechanism entirely: the chain stretches and the tensioner loses control of it. No belt involved.

The fault

What's actually going wrong

This is a chain fault, not a belt fault — the mechanism is completely different. The 1.2 petrol chain runs in a dry housing driven by oil pressure through a hydraulic tensioner. Over the miles the chain elongates as its pins and rollers wear, and the tensioner runs out of adjustment. Once the chain is slack it slaps against its guides, wears them through, and the camshaft timing drifts away from where the engine management expects it. Missed oil changes accelerate the whole process because the tensioner depends on clean oil pressure.

A stretched chain does not usually give much warning before it jumps a tooth or breaks a guide. When that happens the valves and pistons meet, and the repair moves from a chain kit to a cylinder head or a full engine. The rattle on start-up is the window in which this stays a fixed-price job.

Warning signs

Rattle for a few seconds on start-up

The signature chain symptom — the tensioner has not yet pumped up and the slack chain slaps the guides.

Camshaft correlation fault codes

Stored codes showing cam and crank sensors disagreeing because the chain has stretched.

Loss of power or limp mode

Timing drift pulls the engine out of its map and the ECU derates it to protect itself.

Plastic fragments in the sump

Worn chain guides break up and the pieces collect in the oil pan.

How we work

The process

01

Diagnose properly

Fault codes read, live cam timing compared against crank, and the rattle confirmed before any parts are ordered.

02

Chain, guides and tensioner

The chain is never replaced on its own — guides, tensioner and sprockets are assessed as a set. Parts specification: [CONFIRM WITH OWNER: OEM or aftermarket parts policy].

03

Oil service and verification

Correct-grade oil and filter, then cam timing rechecked on the scanner and a road test before collection.
